An-O-Chords Annual Summer Show and Salmon BBQ
Always the last
full weekend
of July, the An-O-Chords Annual Summer Show and Salmon BBQ is a
52 yr tradition, not just in the Evergreen District, but across
North America. Spanning three full days, it's one of the
most colorful Barbershop shows in the country.
The An-O-Chords have a well-deserved reputation for hosting
the best quartets in the world for this show. Three of
the last four years, and dozens of times overall, An-O-Chords'
fortune tellers have contracted that year's Gold medal
winners-to-be, months before the International Contest, (held the first week of
July.) The coveted An-O-Chords gig is often the winners'
first performance after taking the Gold, and we've had some
great ones!

The An-O-Chords Barbershop Weekend features Friday and Saturday
night shows followed by a wonderful beach-front Salmon BBQ
Sunday afternoon in Anacortes' Washington Park. After Saturday
night's performance, the An-O-Chords host a great Afterglow
featuring lots more singing, refreshments, and laughter,
highlighted by local and regional quartets, and more songs by
the headliners. Around daylight, fortified with
steaming coffee, An-O-Chords crews begin setup for the BBQ. Soon,
pits of charcoal and alder wood begin slow-cooking racks of
butterfly filleted whole King salmon, and the air begins to
fill with the intoxicating fragrance of fresh, smoky salmon.
Serving starts at noon. While picturesque ferries
leaving Anacortes ply to
and from the San Juan islands and Victoria BC in front of the
gathering crowd, another crew is setting up a stage and
sound system to host the now-famous An-O-Chords Waterfront
Novice Quartet Contest! Here pickup quartets, co-ed ensembles,
family groups, and non-professional foursomes compete in earnest
for the coveted red An-O-Chords baseball caps. Finally,
there's one more appearance by all the show quartets, and
with a rousing finale of "Keep the Whole World Singing," it's over for
another year. Barbershop Harmony is a heavenly slice
of life here in the Northwest, and we'd love to have you join
us!
