The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, the capital city.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially opened by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company Chairman, as well as many cyclists.
Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction due to its rich history. Elkin explained that nowadays, in addition to its historical treasures, the tunnel project also encompasses modern day tourism. “The inauguration of this tunnel project [is] another element of the development of Jerusalem. The tunnel makes Jerusalem an attractive destination for tourists of all types of audience in Israel as well as around the world.”

The project was funded by Elkin’s ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a key tool in realizing the vision of changing the concept for transportation in Jerusalem. Elkin said that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike routes. In the 90s In the 90s, in the 1990s, Kerem Tunnel was excavated to relocate the main sewer line of Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now used as an infrastructure tunnel. It houses the fifth water line which is operated to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
