The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was opened as a part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around the capital.

Elkin said that, today, in addition to its rich history the tunnel project encompasses modern day tourism. “The launch of the tunnel project is a further part of the expansion of the city of Jerusalem and its transformation into an attractive tourist destination for all kinds of people in Israel and throughout the globe.” Elkin, who heads the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests hundreds of millions in Jerusalem’s tourism development and also in the development of new tourist attractions and ventures that connect the glorious past of Jerusalem to its future. Elkin’s Ministry Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million to the project. The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority. Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project was a key tool in realizing the goal of changing the concept for transportation throughout Jerusalem. “The new tunnel will be connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path.
